Evelyn (nee Larson) Ullberg

Evelyn (nee Larson) Ullberg passed gently from the now into the next on February 20, 2019.  She lived for a long time with dementia growing more simply living and loving.  The sparkle in her eyes and her smile endured all.

Like may unsung heroes, she was second mother to hundreds of Big Hollow School children as the grade school main office secretary, impromptu nurse, and lunch lady—often covering lunch out of her own pocket for children who forgot their lunch cards or just really wanted a hot meal.  She was equally loving of family and friends and regularly kept a house full of young people fed and inspired while playing everything from intense wiffle ball in the yard to D&D in the den.

She was well read and always shared her favorite reads including: Terkel, Royko, Solzhenitzen, Khayyam, and London.

She was born in Andersonville, Chicago on April 11, 1931, to Sigurd and Signy Larson.  She attended Senn High School, Class of 1949.  And her family camped in the Summer at Bluff Lake Lodges where she pumped gas with her sister, Sonja, at the first boat station on the Chain of Lakes and met her future husband, Axel Ullberg.

She enjoyed 64 years of marriage with the love of her life, Axel, having two children, Lars and Erik; and beloved grandchildren, Jessica and Carter (Erik and Annette), and Victoria and Leon (Lars and Teresa).  Evelyn was also very close to surviving nieces and nephews, Larry, Lynda, Lauren, Lon, Charlie, and Lisa; and daughter-in-law Teresa. 

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Axel who passed in July 2013; her sister, Sonja Davis (nee Larson) who passed on the same day, February 20, 2013; her sister-in-law, Vera who passed in 1993; and by her son, Erik, who passed in December 2016.

A Memorial Remembrance will be held Saturday, March 9, from 2-8 p.m.  Family and friends are invited to share their memories and honor Evelyn at the family home at 26911 West Nippersink Road, Ingleside.  Arrangements are being handled by Lars Ullberg (323-273-3006) and his fiancée, Teresa Jiron (708-275-4477).
