Alfred “Al” Zapasnik, 87, a longtime resident of Fox Lake, unexpectedly passed away at home Thursday, February 3, 2022. He was born to the late Peter and Ethel Zapasnik October 27, 1934, in Dearborn, MI, where his dad worked under Henry Ford.
Al served in the Marines and went on to work as a forklift driver and mechanic for Clark Equipment for 25 years. He enjoyed snowmobiling, traveling—especially to Detroit, Florida, and the Wisconsin Dells, and working on his 1947 Mercury, which he loved and considered a second child. He was also known for his humor, often letting his late dog, Oscar, out and telling him, “don’t come back unless you bring me back a mai tai from the Waltonian.”
Al enjoyed helping people including the Korpan Family of Korpan’s Landing on Fox Lake. With his wife and son they volunteered for more than 40 years with Korpan’s Yacht Club, lighthouse-sinking contest, Christmas parade, putting in the piers, and their many other events which brought attention and people to the Village of Fox Lake and the Chain of Lakes.
Survivors include his beloved wife, Margaret “Marge”; beloved son, Carl; lifelong friend, Verl “Frank” Crocker; and many, many loving friends.
Services and inurnment will be private.
