Bernie Schmitt, age 82, passed away March 16, 2021, at his home in Johnsburg. He was born August 5, 1938, in Johnsburg, and was the fourth child of Bernard N. and Gertrude Schmitt.
Bernie is survived by his wife of 59 years, Judy (nee Baur) Schmitt of McHenry; children, Linda Schmitt-McQuitty of Woodland CA, and Steve Schmitt of Johnsburg; and siblings, Rita Schmitt, Rose Marie (Richard) Michels, Dorothy (Richard) Hiller, Hank (Karen) Schmitt, and Ruth (Donald) Kibbe.
Upon graduating from McHenry High School in 1956, Bernie served the US Army in Korea, after which he worked as a bricklayer for Joseph Frett & Son and Tonyan construction companies.
As a lifelong resident of Johnsburg, Bernie spent his pass-time playing softball for Hettermann’s tavern, supporting Johnsburg Forester Court 96 in their annual bowling and euchre tournaments. Bernie also enjoyed gardening and fishing—always fishing. Bernie was a firm believer that there was no such thing as a bad day on the water, and liked to quip, “I only fish on days that end in Y”.
In lieu of a wake, a funeral mass will be held for Bernie on Tuesday, March 23, 2021, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, 2302 W. Church St., Johnsburg, at 9 a.m.
Donations can be sent as a memorial in Bernie’s name to FISH of McHenry Food Pantry, www.FishofMcHenry.org, or PO Box 282, McHenry, IL 60051.
