Betty Lou Hill (nee Turnau), died peacefully on April 24, 2021 surrounded by family at 88 years of age. She was a lifelong resident of the Fox Lake, Illinois area.
Betty was born on January 29, 1933 to Betty and Heinrich (Henry) Turnau in Chicago. After graduating from Grant High School in Fox Lake Illinois in 1950, this homecoming queen married her High School sweetheart Ron Hill in 1952. Shortly after, they moved to Lawton, OK while Ron served in the Army at Fort Sill. After serving, they permanently relocated to Ingleside, IL.
Before starting her family, Betty worked at Great Lakes Naval Base and the Merchandise Mart. She became a stay-at-home Mom until her boys were on their own. She then took a refresher class in typing and worked side by side with Ron at the plumbing shop. They both made the short drive home each day and ate lunch together. After Ron’s passing, she lived independently at the family residence of 65+ years.
Betty dedicated her life to being a mother and wife. She supported her family members through the many passions and difficulties of their lives. She gave back to her community through volunteering at local charities and helping to organize the annual Grant High School all-alumni dinner.
Betty enjoyed gardening and tending to her bird feeders and baths. She also loved “sporty” vehicles and daily trips to the bank and post office. She will be greatly missed.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; and husband, Ronald T. Hill. She is survived by her sons, Stephen Hill (Cindy) of Ingleside, Illinois, David Hill (Susan) of Naperville, Illinois, Ronald A. Hill of Fox Lake, Illinois; her brother, George Schopper (Vicki) of River Falls, Wisconsin; nine grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A public visitation will be held Thursday, April 29, from 4-8 p.m., at Hamsher Lakeside Funerals & Cremations, 12 N. Pistakee Lake Rd., Fox Lake. A private funeral service will be held Friday, April 30, with the Reverend Lisle J. Kauffman officiating. Burial will be in East Fox Lake Cemetery, Lake Villa.
