David “Smitty from the City” Smith, 60, a longtime resident of the Fox Lake area, passed away peacefully Sunday, May 14, 2023, in McHenry.  He was born January 22, 1963, in Chicago, to the late James P. and Marie C. (nee Gartner) Smith.

Smitty was a one-of-a-kind jokester who had a heart of gold.  A painter by trade, he enjoyed fishing, boating, painting, listening to classic rock, grilling out, being outdoors, camping, hiking, and his cats.  He was also known to be and excellent chef, who shared his cooking with his family and friends.  Above all, Smitty was a family man who loved his kids, his grandson, his parents, his siblings, and all of his many friends.

Smitty is survived by his children, Jamie Smith and Briana (Darrien James) Smith; grandson, Wesley James; siblings, Betty (Ray) Fath, James (Cheryl) Smith, Barbara (the late Steve) Koga, John Smith, Robert Smith, Richard (Elda) Smith, and Rosemary Summers; former wife, Vicki Graziano; and by many nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews; and many, many friends.

Visitation Thursday, May 18, from 4-8 p.m., at Hamsher Lakeside Funerals & Cremations, 12 N. Pistakee Lake Rd., Fox Lake.  Visitation will resume Friday, May 19, from 9:30 a.m. until the time of funeral Mass at 10:30 a.m., at The Church of Holy Apostles, 5211 Bull Valley Rd., McHenry.  All are invited to go directly to the church on Friday.  Private urn burial will be in Maryhill Catholic Cemetery, Niles.
