Gary Spengel, 75, of McHenry, IL, passed away on September 16, 2025.

Born on September 7, 1950, Gary spent most of his life In McHenry.  He graduated from St. Mary’s College in Winona, Minnesota and proudly served in the National Guard. He started his career in the meat packing industry with the family business and eventually moved into food service sales. He was dedicated to his family and staying connected to his community.

Gary was known for being particular and occasionally stubborn—but those close to him knew that under that exterior was a deeply loyal and loving man. He had a lifelong passion for golf and spent many days at the McHenry Country Club, where he enjoyed both the game and the company.

He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Lydia; his parents, Theodore and Virginia; his brother, Craig; and his brother-in-law, Mike Johnson.

Gary is survived by his daughter, Valya (Robert) Grempka; and his two cherished grandsons, Harvey and Gavin. He is also survived by his sister-in-law Missy Spengel; and siblings Pam (Marty) Patterson, Kim Johnson, Joy Rossman, Scott (Diane) Spengel, and Keith (Trish) Spengel, along with several nieces and nephews.

A visitation will be held on Monday, September 29, from 9:00–11:00 AM at Colonial Funeral Home. Those who wish are welcome to join the family afterward at the cemetery for a brief graveside service. A celebration of life lunch will follow.

All are welcome to attend any or all parts of the day — whether you come to the visitation, the lunch, or both, the family will be grateful for your presence and support.
