James “Jim” Driscoll, 79, a resident of Fox Lake since 1985, peacefully passed away Thursday, June 16, 2022, at Advocate Good Shepherd Hospital, Barrington, surrounded by his family. He was born March 12, 1943, in McKeesport, Pennsylvania, where he was also raised.
Jim graduated from McKeesport Area High School. He enlisted in the Navy for four years, served on the USS Sandoval, and was honorably discharged as a Boiler Tech in 1965.
After his naval service, Jim moved to Chicago where he began a 30-year career as a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 399, and met his wife of 52 years, Dorothy “Dottie”, whom he married July 3, 1970. During this time he opened his own heating and air-conditioning business, Driscoll Service, which he later sold. Jim retired from the union as the Chief Building Engineer of the 300 South Wacker Drive building, Chicago.
Jim enjoyed his life on Nippersink Lake, where he spent time on his patio watching wildlife and boating on the Chain of Lakes. He was an avid fitness and health mentor and who made close friendships with his fellow gym members. It was also very common for Jim to drop what he was doing to help a family member, neighbor, friend, or stranger with a project or problem.
Above all, Jim was a loving and devoted family man who enjoyed spending time with his family and his beloved grandchildren. Jim was a very involved grandfather who loved taking his grandkids to practices and attending their games/meets—especially wrestling and volleyball.
Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Dottie (nee Zimmerman); children, Danny (Minny) Driscoll, Patty (Ed) Kraus, and Brian (Amy) Driscoll; grandchildren, Ruth, D.J., Justin, Kyle, Ashlin, Jocy, Jessie, Kylee, and Keegan; four great-grandchildren; siblings, Terry (Marlene) Driscoll, Lenny (Mary) Driscoll, and Denise (Gary) Pavel; sister-in-law, Joan Barcroft; and many nieces, nephews, and good friends.
Jim was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Delsia (nee Kuhn) Driscoll; and his sister, Claire Driscoll.
