Michael A. Kacner Obituary

Michael Kacner, 71, passed away on December 20, 2025, due to complications from pancreatic cancer. A dedicated chemist and a man of quiet intellect and humor, Michael’s life was defined by his curiosity for how the world worked and his devotion to his family.

A Career of Innovation

Born on November 15, 1954, in Winona, Minnesota, Michael’s journey in science began at the University of Wisconsin–La Crosse. It was there that he met the love of his life, his late wife Pamela Kacner, née Rang.

Michael went on to have a distinguished career in chemistry, primarily based in Illinois. His professional legacy includes developing essential products for USG and later contributing to the efficiency of food production and processing. He concluded his career as an expert in regulatory affairs for Valspar (Sherwin-Williams), retiring in 2020.

Life Beyond the Lab

While he spent his days solving complex chemical puzzles, Michael’s true joy was found in his downtime. He was a lifelong learner who enjoyed traveling and took immense pride in maintaining the family home. He had a playful spirit, often found himself immersed in a video game or gathered around a table for a board game with friends and family.

Family and Legacy

Michael was preceded in death by his beloved wife on February 9, 2015. He is survived by his children, Benjamin Kacner (Yolanda Martinez Lopez) and Carolyn Thomason (Jim Thomason III); and his two brothers, Peter and John Kacner.

Celebration of Life

In honor of both Michael and Pamela, a joint Celebration of Life will be held on July 18th, 2026. Details regarding the specific location will be shared with friends and family once finalized.

Memorial Donations

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to a cancer-research charity of your choice, in hopes of helping other families face the challenges of pancreatic cancer.
