Mildred “Millie” Shastal (nee Baron), 95, a longtime resident of Spring Grove, formerly of PistakeeHighlands and Chicago, unexpectedly passed away Saturday, July 19, 2025, at Northwestern Hospital, McHenry.  She was born May 23, 1930, in Chicago, to the late Edward and Ann (nee Lipinski) Baron.

Millie retired from the A&P Grocery in Fox Lake after a 30-year career and was instrumental in helping start and operate the family business, Pro Circle Golf Center in Spring Grove.  In 2000, Millie and her late husband, Clarence “Clare”, cut back on their responsibilities at Pro Circle to enjoy trips to Hawaii and their home in Estero, FL.  After Clare passed away, Millie enjoyed talking and listening to with customers in the breezeway at Pro Circle.  She was knowing for, “giving people the business.”

Millie was very active in the Lions Club of Fox Lake from selling tickets and volunteering for events, to serving in various leadership roles including club president.  Her dedication to the club and Lions International earned her the Melvin Jones Fellowship Award and lifetime member status.  She also volunteered with the Fox Lake Chamber of Commerce, was a member of St. Peter’s Catholic Church in Spring Grove, and generous with charities that helped children.

Survivors include her children, Gary (Ann) Shastal, Karen Gutekunst, Debbie Henriksen, and Tammy (Paul) Hardy; six grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, extended family members, and good friends.

In addition to her parents, Millie was preceded in death by her husband on November 13, 2009; a grandson; and four siblings.

Services and inurnment in St. Peter’s Catholic Cemetery Columbarium, Spring Grove, will be private.

In lieu of flowers, memorials in Millie’s name to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, appreciated.
