Rufus Gentry, 89, of Fox Lake, formerly of Las Vegas, Nevada, passed away peacefully Tuesday, April 14, 2020, at home surrounded by family.
He was born January 16, 1931, to the late Hilton and Jennie (nee Bennett) Gentry, in Dawson Springs, Kentucky. Rufus married Margaret Croissant-Pyka on June 14, 1952.
After an honorable discharge from the Navy, Rufus had a long, successful 40-year career as a model maker for Admiral and Zenith Television in Chicago. He was a member of Messiah Lutheran Church in Wauconda and Community Lutheran Church in Las Vegas, as well as Happy Seniors at the Round Lake Park District, where he enjoyed playing Bingo and cards. Rufus was an avid gardener who enjoyed growing his own food and attending to his large garden. Above all, Rufus will be known as a humble and kind family man who was always willing to lend a hand to anyone needing help with a repair or project.
Rufus was the loving husband of 67 years to Margie; loving dad to Ed (Cindy) Gentry of Hebron, Mike (Elizabeth) Gentry of Fox Lake, and Kathy (Mike) Matuszek of St. Charles; loving grandpa to seven grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren; and beloved uncle and friend to many.
In addition to his parents, Rufus was preceded in death by grandson, Tommy Gentry; and brother, Fred Gentry.
A celebration of Rufus’ life, with Navy honors, will be announced for a future date.
